Weekly Email Update 2.7.22

Weekly Email Update 2.7.22

“Your intent vs. impact. I understand you did not intend to do that but it had an impact on me and now that you know and now that you’re aware of it, how will you change? And that’s really all that we’re asking.”
Mia Schultz, who is featured in the project, “I Am Vermont Too”. The goal of this project is to shine a light on the experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in the state. The project uses photos to depict a Vermonter’s face holding a whiteboard with anything from a microaggression to something else they want to share about themselves. The exhibit will be at the VT Statehouse from February 1st, 2022 through February 25th, 2022. The exhibit is also available to travel to schools throughout Vermont.

New additions to this week's Weekly Email Update include soupscription information from Sister District VT, a film event at Next Stage Arts in Putney, a Zoom discussion of bullying, and a Peace and Justice Center book club meeting, among others. Please take a moment to scroll through to the end to see all the ways you can be a part of positive change here in Windham County.
Just a reminder to our group leaders, organizers, and activists: this month is Black History month, so please submit your local event information to [email protected] ASAP! Thank you!

Anita Chitaya has a gift; she can help bring abundant food from dead soil, she can make men fight for gender equality, and she can end child hunger in her village. Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge: persuading Americans that climate change is real. Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House, she meets climate skeptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US, from the rural-urban divide, to schisms of race, class and gender, to the thinking that allows Americans to believe we live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to persuade us that we’re all in this together.
This documentary, ten years in the making, weaves together the most urgent themes of our times: climate change, gender and racial inequality, the gaps between the rich and the poor, and the ideas that groups around the world have generated in order to save the planet.
Directed by Raj Patel and Zak Piper
Narrated by Anita Chitaya with Peter Mazunda

Brattleboro Democracy Forum: "The Despotic Branch: The Undemocratic Nature of the Supreme Court" with Tim Lipp, Nick Biddle, and Friends
Tuesday, February 8th, 2022, Online. 6:30pm.
To Join Zoom Meeting click on this link on February 8th: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89903359871?pwd=ZVdPQXJDUmlLblFIMTUwemxjUWpZdz09
Watch the presentation and take part in the discussion.
Tim and Nick say:
The Supreme Court’s initial assertion in 1803 of the authority to nullify congressional law caused Thomas Jefferson to characterize the court as the Despotic Branch. Jimmy Carter recently concluded that the Supreme Court’s powers rendered the United States into an oligarchy. Contrary to our historic myths the Supreme Court is not a democratic institution. Throughout our history the high court, with a few notable exceptions, has been the bulwark of protecting property rights over human rights, of undermining democracy. The current court is on track to be the most egregiously anti-democratic court in the nation’s history. Tim Kipp and Nick Biddle will detail the substance of the high court’s despotic powers and how it has reached today’s all-time low.

Forward Together Online Launch
Wednesday, February 9th, 2022, Online. 6pm-7pm.
Register here to let us know you’re coming & to get any updates. Questions? Email [email protected]
Streaming on Facebook and YouTube.
Join members of the Vermont Workers’ Center to join our effort demanding that Vermont’s elected officials move #ForwardTogether and not one step back on our human rights.
During the COVID-19 emergency, thousands of poor and low-wealth people in Vermont have benefited from the state’s expanded Medicaid eligibility, the motel voucher program, and the moratorium on evictions and foreclosures. Despite the widely acknowledge benefit of these efforts, Vermont’s leaders have already allowed the eviction and foreclosure moratorium to expire, plan to end the motel voucher program on March 1, and will kick thousands of people off Medicaid once the federal public health emergency is officially lifted.
The pandemic has also exacerbated the crisis in our underfunded primary care and community health system, putting pressure on health care and home care workers across the state. Yet rather than shifting resources to prioritize public health and community health needs, Vermont’s leaders are doubling down on the state’s relationship with UVM Health Network, a private hospital company.
Join us on Feb. 9 to find out how you can be involved in efforts to move forward together on our human rights.

Literary Cocktail Hour: Jonathan Evison, Author of “Small World"
Part of the Brattleboro Literary Festival

Friday, February 11th, 2022, Online. 5pm.
Free. Register for the event
HERE.
The Brattleboro Literary Festival invites you to join us for a virtual Literary Cocktail Hour, featuring author Jonathan Evison.
In the July 1845 issue of the Democratic Review, an editorial urged “the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” It’s believed to be the first time the expression “manifest destiny,” a staple of high school history papers for over a century, ever appeared in print.
In Small World, a train accident reveals the connections among a host of people across race, class, history, and the country in this historical epic with a Dickensian flair. But despite making the worlds-in-collision setup clear early, Evison has still crafted a suspenseful novel, as he shuttles between the train’s riders in 2019 and their forebears in the 1850s. In exploring the passengers’ lives and those of their ancestors more than a century before, Small World chronicles 170 years of American nation-building from numerous points of view across place and time.
Jonathan Evison is also the author of the novels All About Lulu; West of Here; The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving; This Is Your Life, Harriet Chance!; and Legends of the North Cascades.
He is also the author of Lawn Boy, now banned in many schools and subject of recent controversy. Fight censorship and support Jonathan!

Often these resources and sites are looked upon as isolated finds, rather than part of a wider community with a shared history. Learning to view geographical landscapes, natural resources and historical events as interconnected creates a more accurate understanding of our culture and times and better informs us how to preserve and interpret these resources.
Gail Golec has been a professional archaeologist for over 20 years, working on site primarily in New Hampshire and Vermont. Born and raised in the area, Golec has undertaken extensive research projects focusing on the Contact Period/Early Colonial Settlement, 18th and 19th century cemeteries and documenting the lives of Indigenous and African American community members of the Greater Falls and Monadnock Region. Golec teaches classes on these topics, gives community lectures and writes and produces a podcast about historic cemeteries called "The Secret Life of Death".

Curbside Open Hours. All are welcome - we just ask you to provide your town of residence and number in household for our data tracking purposes.
Stay in your car, please. Volunteers will take your order and bring out boxes of food, including nonperishable items, fresh produce, paper goods, meat, and dairy products.

Everyone Eats continues, including grab-and-go meals at these times and locations:

  • There is no longer an Everyone Eats distribution at Turning Point on Sundays, as Edible Brattleboro is dormant in the winter.
  • The meals at Retreat Farm are stocked in their farm stand for pick up anytime, first come first serve. We are planning to stock on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Folks receiving services through Foodworks, Loaves and Fishes, and the Brattleboro Community Justice Center can obtain free meals through those organizations.
You can also order Everyone Eats! meals directly from participating restaurants using the Localvore App.
