Aug 24 – Sept 1

“Kids don’t have a little brother working in the coal mine, they don’t have a little sister coughing her lungs out in the looms of the big mill towns of the Northeast. Why? Because we organized; we broke the back of the sweatshops in this country; we have child labor laws. Those were not benevolent gifts from enlightened management. They were fought for, they were bled for, they were died for by working people, by people like us. Kids ought to know that.”

— Utah Phillips

Location: Putney Post Office, 109 Main Street Putney, VT

Nonviolent protests that engage just over 3.5 percent of the population have never failed to bring about change! For a bold, inclusive, compassionate democracy that lifts everyone. We are committed to nonviolence in words and actions, rooted in Gandhi’s philosophy.

To contrast and resist hate, fear, cruelty, and despair, bring yourself, a chair if needed, and a sign that positively and constructively focuses on compassionate democracy. Please no profanity, and no slogans that denigrate others’ beliefs. We do not aim to shame nor alienate neighbors; instead to create a safe, welcoming community for all who support democracy. Or just come and hold one of our signs that speaks to you! We always have signs for attendees

Civil Rights For All banner raising

Sunday,  8/31/0025, at 8 am

Organizer: We Celebrate Democracy Civil Rights For All

Location: on Main St. Brattleboro by Brillance

Woody Bernhard will be taking the We celebrate Democracy Civil Rights For All banner down to the Brattleboro fire house next week and the fire company will hang the banner between 8 and 9 am on Sunday the 31st.

The words on the banner are deeply meaningful in these Trump/Project 2025 times, and the banner raising and its week of flying over Main Street cry out for us to stand with the words on the banner and to celebrate the heroic people who labor for us all.

Susan and I will be there at 8 am with 20 pro democracy signs. Please join us and hold a sign, or come with your own sign any day of the week to stand for democracy.

Organizer: Indivisible Bellows Falls, Rockingham Democratic Committee

Location: Church Street & Westminster Street, Bellows Falls

Sidewalk visibility event — bring signs, flags and a friend or neighbor who hasn’t participated in a protest yet. We will stand up against the illegal occupation of DC, the cruel attacks on immigrants and the authoritarian excesses of the current regime. This Labor Day we will continue to stand strong, fighting for public schools over private profits, healthcare over hedge funds, shared prosperity over corporate politics.

Indivisible Brattleboro is joining with Bellows Falls this Labor Day.
The billionaires continue to wage a cruel war on working people. We will stand in solidarity with all our communities under attack and fight for real wins for all our people.

The Brattleboro session is full and there is a waitlist

Steve Crofter and Laurel Green are conducting a series of half-day nonviolent direct action (NVDA) trainings in Southeastern Vermont. They have decades of experience using nonviolent action.  This is an early notice that they are offering NVDA training to increase the discipline and effectiveness of people trying to make a positive difference in climate, democracy, and social justice issues.

The training will include:

  • Finding courage to act,

  • The effectiveness of nonviolence,

  • How to make social change in solidarity with others,

  • And more!

The training is a great opportunity to bring together folks from many local movements including Third Actors, Indivisible folks, people working on Gaza, democracy, climate and immigration. All are welcome.

The August 29 training in Brattleboro will end early enough to allow participants to join in either or both of the long-standing Brattleboro Friday afternoon protests on the I-91 bridge and at The Common.

Pre-registration will be required for all sessions. Please register for the waitlist for the Brattleboro session using this link: ascvt.org/nvda

The event is free and all are welcome (especially kids!), though for those who are able, there is a suggested contribution of $15.

What Does Democracy Look Like? Call for Artists!!

Sunday,  11/16/2025, time TBA

Organizer: Indivisible Brattleboro

Location: Latchis Theatre, 50 Main Street

Submit works in any medium, visual, literary, or performance, to explore democracy at the Latchis Theater, Sunday, 11/16/25.

This one-night event aims to uncover the heart and soul of democratic community through visual art, performance, storytelling, moderated community discussion and creative audience participation to address the question, What Does Democracy Look Like?

We will elevate stories that make people feel the beauty of democracy in their bones–its joy, its grief, its hope, its worth. Why? Because capturing people’s hearts is more effective than logical argument. Because America’s heart will be won by the most beautiful story. Because America needs us to remind her that democracy is beautiful, that it is possible, and that we can revitalize it together.

This hybrid gallery and stage program will include a visual arts gallery which will be open for browsing before, during, and after the stage program.  Audience members will be invited to contribute reflections via a “Democracy Wall”.

Presented in partnership with Indivisible Brattleboro.

All pieces must be consistent with Indivisible Brattleboro’s core norms of respect, responsibility, and resilience, and fostering inclusive participation.

Deadline for submissions: October 5th
Notification of acceptance: October 19th

Contact: indibrattleboro@gmail.com

Another source for posters, signs and ideas

Jon Sachs, a Swing Blue Alliance member is pouring energy into a Trump Tragedies website that has a page devoted to free, downloadable 8.5 x 11 in. protest-themed posters.

These are protest messaging that can be posted on America’s streets and easily shared by a website link could help get much more protest messaging in the public eye. Eighteen posters are now available on the site. There’s also an online suggestion box for additional posters that people think should be added.
